The Marina District

Where the city meets the bay!

The sunny, sparkling Marina is a favorite destination in San Francisco. What's not to like about views of the bay, the Marin headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge? Glorious sunsets? Running at dawn? Playing on grassy fields? Shopping and dining on Chestnut Street?

At its western end is the Presidio and the Palace of Fine Arts. The latter is a classic structure reminiscent of Roman temples, designed by Bernard Maybeck in 1915 and a favorite tourist destination for photos. From 3435 Broderick you can enjoy a view of the Palace all day and all night (when it lights up spectacularly) from the solarium. Lucky you!

To the east is Fort Mason, a former Army post which is now an extraordinary cultural arts center. To the north is beautiful Marina Boulevard, the Marina Green, Crissy Field, and the St. Francis and Golden Gate yacht clubs. To the south is Cow Hollow, Union Street and Pacific Heights.

In between are clean, charming residential blocks lined with beautifully maintained homes and multi-unit buildings, many of them in the Spanish-Mediterranean style popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and all of them lit up by the sun that so often shines on this desirable district of the city.
